How This Capybara Enhances Relationships

I couldn't wait for the Easter break. I decided to do a girl's weekend in Miami with my 14-year-old daughter. All I could think about was how magical it would be to create brand-new memories we can both reflect back on for years to come.

I quickly recognized how our ideas of vacations are very different from one another.

Me: Splashing in the waves, exploring the beach and reading a great book poolside.

Pey: Watching YouTube on her phone, swinging in a hammock.

You can imagine my inner monologue as a midlife mom:

"I spent all this money for her to be on her phone."

"She can't even pull herself away from watching videos."

"Is she a TikTok addict?"

On day 4, we were caught in the torrential Miami storm, you know, the one that closed down Fort Lauderdale airport, and we were stuck at the resort.

"Mom, can we get a Capybara?" Pey asked.

"Pey, can you please get off the phone, let's walk or go down to the lobby."

"Mom, just come watch this with me, please?"

I relinquished control and together, we sat on the bed and watched Capybara videos on TikTok — not my first choice, nor my fourth choice of what to do

However, one video led us to over an hour of laughing hysterically, telling imaginary stories about how our dogs would play with our pet Capybara and going down the rabbit hole of research, what the hell is a Capybara really?

I realized then, as we sat on the bed making one of the greatest memories of our trip, there is so much to learn from every generation and openness is a gift.

This openness is what will make us even more valuable in the business world and as humans. Explore everything with curiosity and objectivity and, you never know, you may be just as surprised as I was.
